Design

We are interested in the details that most products leave behind.

In the umbrella category, familiar solutions have been repeated for years: a separate sleeve, an exposed handle, and a wet umbrella that remains difficult to carry once the rain has stopped. OAVA began by questioning these assumptions.

Our design process starts with the product, the person using it, and the small emotions created through everyday use. We look for ways to make an object simpler, more natural, and more satisfying—while considering materials, durability, and responsible production from the beginning.

Several principles guide the way we design at OAVA.

SIMPLICITY

We reduce each product to what is necessary.

OAVA’s sleeve is stored within the handle, rather than existing as a separate accessory. The mechanism is compact, intuitive, and designed to work with a simple pull and rotation.

We avoid unnecessary parts and decorative details. What remains is shaped by function, proportion, and the natural character of the materials.

CONNECTION

Connection is central to OAVA.

The sleeve is not an accessory that can be detached or forgotten. It remains connected to the handle, ready to be pulled out when needed and returned when the umbrella is stored.

This practical connection also creates a more complete relationship between the umbrella, its sleeve, and the person using it.

RESTRAINT

We believe a well-designed product does not need to be loud.

OAVA uses quiet colours, soft matte surfaces, and considered proportions to create a presence that feels refined without being excessive. The design is intended to sit naturally in a hand, a bag, or a home.

Every line and detail has a reason to exist.

TACTILITY

The experience of a product begins before it is used.

We pay close attention to the way the handle feels in the hand, the way the fabric gathers, the resistance of the rotating mechanism, and the gentle movement of the sleeve as it is pulled from the opening.

These small physical details turn a functional action into something calm and natural.

LONGEVITY

We design for repeated use, not short-lived novelty.

A considered product should remain useful, understandable, and desirable over time. By reducing unnecessary components, choosing durable materials, and refining the construction through repeated testing, we aim to create objects that can become part of everyday life for years.

For OAVA, responsible design begins with making an umbrella that people can use more completely, more comfortably, and more thoughtfully.
